How a Hero was Defined

On Saturday August 14, Genesee Valley Center and WFNT-AM will host a “Victory over Japan Day” celebration in center court.  This event marks the second salute to local WW II heroes held at the center.  Last year, June 6, 2004, Genesee Valley Center and WFNT hosted a  D-Day celebration honoring WWII veterans and home front heroes.  This year’s celebration will feature new and familiar attractions such now-and-then photographs, war-time correspondence, uniforms, 1940s cars, and displays of local veteran’s memorabilia.

The celebration kicks off at 10:00am in the Genesee Valley Center’s center court with a breakfast for WWII veterans sponsored by the center and hosted by WFNT’s Dan Foley.  Also highlighting the days programming will be a VJ-Day news simulation read by the WJRT-TV12 news crew.  Newscasters will bring to life the dramatic events of the day as they unfolded some 60 years ago.   Also the Flint Elks Chorus will honor our local veterans, in song, as they perform patriotic favorites from the wartime period.

The feature attraction of the day’s events will be a “Hollywood USO” show by the Flint Community Players.  This show will be performed in three one half hour intervals and will feature professional actors and vocalists, all performing in authentic 1940’s attire.

In addition to the entertainment being held in the Genesee Valley Center’s center court there will be children’s reading by character Betsy Ross and Uncle Sam in King Arthur’s Castle, the indoor playground in the JCPenney court in 1p.m..

All WWII veterans, Rosie the Riveter’s, and home front heroes are invited to attend this event.  Veterans interested in displaying memorabilia in Genesee Valley Center, during this event, should contact the Genesee Valley Center marketing department at 810.732.4006.  To make reservations for the breakfast call 810.732.4000
